Judo Federation Slovenia (GAN judo)

Brief outline of the history of GAN judo in SLOVENIA
In early 70 some disabled Slovenia judokas participated in judo sport. We perceived some G movement with VI judokas by Mr. Toncek Kos and people with hearing problems by Mr. Aljosa Redzepovic. All this movement was a part of mainstream judo.
Two coaches Mojmir Kovac and Tomo Dadic started with G judo in October 1994 with one group of 5 people with mental handicap in Judo club Portoroz. In 1995 our group increased to 10 judokas and we were training judo once a week. In 1996 we held a team presentation at Slovenian cerebral palsy recreation center Soncek and during the session some of the spectator’s parents volunteers joined us. In 1997 Darij Somen and Tomo Dadic were doing judo session with almost 120 people on cerebral palsy summer camp.
In June 2000 we met Mr. Ben Van der Eng on European Special Olympic Games. That was our first contact with G judo project. In September 2000 three coaches were participated on G judo meeting in Cardiff. In December 2000 G judo started in Judo club Koper and in 2001 in Judo club Zmajcki and Jesenice. On May 2002 we represented G judo on official European senior championship in Maribor.
The number of handicap people in Slovenia is about 140.000. Only 1100 handicap people are participating in sport activities on national level. 40 people of them are G judokas.
The number of G judokas on September 2006 in Slovenia is 60 G judokas (more than 70% mental handicapped, other with cerebral palsy). G judo are training 12 coaches in 5 judo clubs.
All judokas and coaches are members of Slovenian Judo organization. Most of them are also members of Special Olympics (70%). Clubs are connected with other organizations, day centres, parents, volunteers etc.
